The Fear That Shows Up When Life Is Good

The Fear That Shows Up When Life Is Good

Dear Younger Fred… you're going to be terrified...

Not when things are falling apart.
Not when life is difficult.
Not when you're struggling.

Ironically…

you're going to be terrified when things are going well.

When your family is healthy.
When your career is stable.

When life finally starts feeling like it's moving in the right direction.

Because that's when a different question begins to appear...

One that's much harder to answer.

"Is this where I want to stay?"

Not because you're unhappy.
Not because you're ungrateful.

In fact, you may be further than you ever imagined possible.

The younger version of you would be amazed.

But somewhere inside, you'll feel it.

A pull.
A curiosity.
A challenge.

You'll start wondering:

"Am I capable of more?"
"Have I reached my potential?"
"Is there another version of me I haven't met yet?"

And then the fear arrives...

Because suddenly, the risk isn't failure...

The risk is leaving something good.

The risk is stepping into uncertainty when certainty finally showed up.

The risk is becoming a beginner again.

And that is terrifying.

Your mind will immediately start doing what minds do.

What if I fail?
What if I make the wrong decision?
What if I lose what I've built?

But eventually you'll ask a different question.
A better question... Imagine yourself sitting in your mid-80s...looking back.

Would you regret taking the shot?
Or would you regret never taking it?

And almost immediately, the answer becomes clear.

Because when you look back on your life, the things that haunt you most are rarely the risks you took.

They're the possibilities you abandoned.
The conversations you never had.
The opportunities you never explored.
The versions of yourself you never allowed to exist.

And then you'll remember something you've spent years telling other people...

You don't need to have everything figured out.
You only need to know the next best step.

That's it.

Not the next ten years.
Not the entire roadmap.
Just the next step.

Because even if you go for it and it doesn't work out…

you can still take the next best step after that.
Isn't that how you got here in the first place?

One decision.
One lesson.
One mistake.
One opportunity at a time.

You've never had the whole blueprint.
You just kept moving forward.

Younger Fred…

don't be afraid of being scared.

Fear is often just a sign that you're standing at the edge of growth.

And if you're fortunate enough to find yourself terrified one day…

it may be because life is offering you the chance to become someone new.

Take the shot.
Fail hard.
Learn fast.
Trust yourself.

Because twenty years from now…

the greatest risk may not be that you tried and failed.

It may be realizing you never tried at all.

Baaaaam — that's it for today.

See you next Thursday.

Stay curious,
Fred
