You're Not Lost, You're Between Chapters

You're Not Lost, You're Between Chapters

Dear Younger Fred… you're not lost — you're just between chapters

In 2026, the headlines feel heavy again.

Layoffs.
Hiring freezes.
Students unsure about job prospects.
Professionals wondering what country they'll even be working in next year.
Markets shifting.
Industries restructuring.

The uncertainty feels loud.

And it reminds you of something.

The year you finished your undergrad...

We had just gone through the financial crisis of 2008.
Confidence was shaken.
Hiring slowed.
The future felt blurry.

You remember the feeling.

That bubble in your chest.

"What am I going to do next month?"
"What if no one hires me?"
"What if I chose the wrong degree?"

Transitions amplify fear.

But here's what you eventually learned:

Every generation believes their uncertainty is unprecedented.

The details change.
The headlines rotate.
The tension feels the same.

And here's the shift that saved your sanity:

Stop trying to solve the next 15 years.

Focus on the next best choice.

Not the perfect move.
Not the forever plan.
Just the next right step.

When you shrink the timeline to today,
the anxiety shrinks with it.

You can't control global policy.
You can't predict economic cycles.
You can't map your entire career from here.

And when you look back,
most of the things you lost sleep over
never unfolded the way you imagined.

So why suffer twice?

Instead, ask yourself:

What's one simple action I can take today
that, if repeated consistently,
would greatly change the outcomes of my life?

Go for a walk — even 20 minutes.
Eat a little better than yesterday.
Read a few pages.
Learn a new skill.
Consume positive content.
Have one real conversation.
Connect with a mentor.

Nothing dramatic.

Just small, disciplined moves.

Where do we start if not with the simple?
If we can't do the simple, why jump to the hard?

Simple, done daily, compounds.

You won't see it in the days.
You won't see it in the weeks.
But just because you can't see it
doesn't mean it isn't working.

We have to be smarter than that.

You weren't lost back then.

You were between chapters.

And if you're reading this feeling uncertain right now —
you probably are too.

Baaaaam — that's it for today.
See you next Thursday.

Stay curious,
Fred.
