Nobody Was Harder on You Than You

Nobody Was Harder on You Than You

Dear Younger Fred… Nobody was harder on you than you...

For years, you'll think the pressure is coming from everywhere else.

Family.
Clients.
Managers.
Deadlines.
Expectations.

But eventually, you'll realize the loudest pressure lived in your own mind.

You'll replay conversations long after they end.

Second‑guess decisions.

Fixate on what went wrong instead of what went right.

You'll achieve things you once prayed for…

And barely let yourself enjoy them before moving the goalpost again.

Because deep down, you'll quietly believe:

"It's still not enough."

You thought that voice was helping you.

And maybe, for a while, it did.

It pushed you to improve.

To learn.
To grow.

But over time… it became exhausting.

Like programming you forgot you installed —
and can't figure out how to shut off.

Because no accomplishment ever actually silenced the pressure.

There was always another level.
Another target.
Another reason to feel behind.

Then one day, after a long week of work, Madelaine will notice something before you do.

You can't relax.

Even after good news.
Even after progress.
Even after a win.

She'll look at you and ask something simple:

"Are you ever going to let yourself feel proud?"

And honestly…

You won't know how to answer.

Because somewhere along the way, you became better at pushing yourself
than appreciating yourself.

Fatherhood will start changing that.

Because when you look at your son, you'll realize something instantly:

You would never speak to him the way you speak to yourself.

You would never tell him:

"You should be further ahead."
"You're not doing enough."
"You need to be better."

You'd encourage him.

Support him.

Remind him he's growing.

And slowly, you'll realize…

Maybe you deserved some of that grace too.

Discipline matters.
Growth matters.
Progress matters.

But self‑compassion matters too.

Because the goal was never to achieve more and more…

while feeling less and less inside.

Maybe that's why so many successful people still feel exhausted.

Not because they aren't enough —
but because they never let themselves feel like they are.

So take a breath once in a while.

You're growing.
You're learning.
You're doing better than you think.

And maybe — just maybe —
becoming kinder to yourself
is part of the growth too.

Baaaaam — that's it for today.
See you next Thursday.

Stay curious,
Fred
