When You're Healthy, You Have Many Problems

When You're Healthy, You Have Many Problems

Dear Younger Fred… when you're healthy, you have many problems. When you're sick, you only have one…

This photo was you right before emergency surgery...

For most of your life, you'll spend your days worrying about all kinds of things.

Career goals.

Deadlines.

Finances.

Relationships.

The future.

The things you should have done.

The things you haven't done yet.

Your mind will bounce between dozens of problems every single day.

Then one day…

you'll get sick.

Not the kind of sick where you simply need a little extra rest.

The kind that slowly begins taking over your life.

The kind where pain follows you everywhere.

A few months ago, that's exactly what happened.

What started as an infection eventually landed you in the hospital and led to emergency surgery.

And something strange happened.

All the problems that once felt so important…

disappeared.

Not because they were solved.

Because they no longer mattered.

When pain becomes constant, it consumes your attention.

It follows you into meetings.

Into conversations.

Into meals.

Into sleep.

You stop thinking about next year.

You stop worrying about career goals.

You stop caring about things that normally bother you.

Because your entire world shrinks down to one thought:

"I just want this to stop."

People who haven't experienced significant pain often underestimate its effect.

Pain isn't just physical.

It's emotional.

It steals your patience.

It steals your focus.

It changes how you show up for the people around you.

Even moments that should bring joy feel different when discomfort is constantly sitting beside you.

And during those weeks, something became incredibly clear.

Health isn't everything.

But when it's gone…

it suddenly feels like everything.

The irony is that most of us spend our healthiest years sacrificing the very thing that makes everything else possible.

More work.

Less sleep.

More stress.

Less movement.

Always assuming we'll take better care of ourselves later.

As if later is guaranteed.

Younger Fred…

take care of your health.

Go for the walk.

Book the appointment.

Get the extra sleep.

Spend time with the people you love.

Because one day you'll realize that many of the problems you spend your life worrying about…

are privileges disguised as inconveniences.

And on the days you wake up healthy…

you've already won more than you know.

Baaaaam — that's it for today.

See you next Thursday.

Stay curious,

Fred
